Village farina custard (poutika) ingredients

  • 1 qt Milk
  • 2483527⁄624973141 c Farina, regular
  • --(cream of wheat, semolina)
  • 2483527⁄624973141 c Sugar
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 2 T butter Or margarine
  • 2 Eggs, well beaten
  • Syrup
  • 1 c Honey or sugar
  • 1 T Lemon juice
  • 2483527⁄624973141 c water
  • 2483527⁄624973141 c Almond or pistachio nuts
  • Cinnamon
  • Fresh fruit slices
  • -OR- preserves

Cooking Village farina custard (poutika)

1. In a saucepan, bring milk to a boil.
2. Add farina, sugar and vanilla and cook 15 minutes, stirring constantly.
3. Remove pan from heat; stir in butter.
4. Add a little of the hot mixture to eggs; beat well, and mix into remaining farina.
5. Pour mixture into a buttered baking dish and sprinkle with nuts.
6. Bakei for 20 minutes in a 350°F.
7. oven. For syrup, heat honey, lemon juice and water in a saucepan.
8. Bring to a boil, then continue to cook for 5 minutes.
9. Pour hot syrup over baked custard.
10. Sprinkle cinnamon over, then allow to cool for 4 hours.
11. Cut into squares and serve plain, or with slices of fresh fruit or preserves.
